UNVEILING THE MAGIC: A FIRST LOOK AT DRAGON AGE: THE VEILGUARD'S SPELLBINDING GAMEPLAY

Few fantasy games create more buzz than an entry in the Dragon Age series. After showcasing a trailer during the Xbox Games Showcase and then revisiting it with live gameplay demo at Summer Game Fest, the upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard is ready to present itself to the gaming community as an enchanting experience for genre fans and newcomers alike. Let’s figure out why Dragon Age: The Veilguard stands out from the typical shadowy cinematics and creates such a gorgeous display, defying its trailer.

A TRAILER'S DECEPTION & THE GAMEPLAY'S REDEMPTION

When EA first debuted its third-person battle royale Dragon Age: The Veilguard with a trailer made of computer graphics, it was the stylised look and irreverent mien that first set the fanbase’s collective pulse-rate racing. A popular YouTube chorus of concern soon complained that the game … might have gone in the direction of Fortnite instead of that of its spiritual ancestors: there was no place for that sassy .. childish visual language in a deep, dark fantasy. However, after getting my hands on the playable demo for The Veilguard – which kicks off with an effervescent, swashbuckling first hour – my worries about the game not honouring its legacy soon fell away; no, The Veilguard not only honours its legacy, it pays it a rocking tribute by adding a lot of modern spice.

THE VIBRANT WORLD AWAITS: A PRELUDE TO ADVENTURE

You know right away that The Veilguard is a visual treat. With an opening act set in an advanced magical city, The Veilguard takes the series to new, splashy heights – with some of the most radiant vistas and artful character movements ever seen in the Dragon Age universe. You don’t want the story to end. Demon siege crashes the action and sends the city spiralling into the story territory you’d expect from an epic Dragon Age saga, with and without the fantasy visuals that make the Dragon Age universe so rewarding to explore.

A NOSTALGIC JOURNEY WITH A FRESH COAT OF PAINT

Returning players will be pleased to see the return of the old favourite Varric and his incessant rocky-road patter, the comic relief from the silent bloodbath which is Inquisition’s colourful new home: ‘I don’t even miss Varric. I’m just thrilled to be back, the Red Hart’s still here, and most importantly, regular humans are around again. And not just any humans, but familiar humans, people who can make the Inquisition’s serious story fun.

THE NARRATIVE'S HEARTBEAT: FROM PAST COMPANIONS TO NEW CHALLENGES

What makes The Veilguard arguably the most luminous of the three, is its storyline, the return of the Dreadwolf Solas. Fans have long awaited this confrontation as a bright thread that weaves past experiences right here, to the present. With Inquisition’s marriage of rich, character-driven and vivid storytelling to the slick, modern action of the gameplay, its promise is a complex and layered experience to play.

COMBAT EVOLVED: STRIKING A VIBRANT BALANCE

Battles in The Veilguard are a masterclass in tactical depth layered atop real-time pace. Faithful to the series, you could always pause the action and plot out turns of movement and special abilities, mixing strategy and spontaneity in a dazzling combat medley. On the battlefield, every moment is frenetic, every decision decisive, while always respecting the long-standing strategy at the game’s heart. Combat is busy and immersive, both a spectacle and a challenge. I watched as dozens of enemies surged forward, overwhelming my little square of defenders. I deployed my heroes shrewdly, using nimble characters to quickly flank enemies before unleashing deadly abilities. I weaved through the fray, planting devastating bombs and lighting my foes aflame. The Left 4 Dead-like synergy with your comrades was crucial: if they charged forward to attack Elites, I could sneak around and get the kill-shot on their armoured backs. In turn, they could revive me if I took damage, so I could return the favour with big moves whenever they were surrounded. We worked as a team. We won. Until we didn’t. Missions were challenging but rewarding, always culminating in a set-piece boss fight. Defeating the Elites is the most visceral, satisfying moment in The Veilguard. The sense of bounding towards your enemy, sliding into position, activating your abilities as a character’s eyes glare in triumph: it’s as immersive as any action game I’ve ever played. And when you pull off big combos, your on-screen avatar becomes your surrogate, feeling the thrill of laying waste to everything in sight.

BEYOND THE TRAILER: A VIBRANT TESTAMENT TO THE DRAGON AGE LEGACY

But the demo for The Veilguard has shown that the most recent game in the Dragon Age series has the potential for a much deeper, richer, and more beautiful gaming experience – emotionally persuasive as well as visually, as embedded in the narrative as in the strong visuals of the robust, passionate characters that fans have grown to love.

UNDERSTANDING VIBRANT IN THE CONTEXT OF DRAGON AGE: THE VEILGUARD

Ultimately, the vibrant of Dragon Age: The Veilguard cannot be separated from the dictionary vibrant – from the visceral spirit, from the kinetic imagery, from the passionate fandom. It cannot define what the game’s world, characters and gameplay look and feel like without also describing that world, those characters and that gameplay as vibrant. If The Veilguard can enchant the fantasy RPG community into a mutually beneficial relationship, it will be a signal both of what contemporary fantasy RPGs should be, and of what Brian Davidson wrote: fantasy, at the end of the day, was always more than geeky pastimes and thinly veiled Dungeons & Dragons homages; it was about creating a world that was as deep and textured and nuanced as it was visually striking.

That word – ‘vibrant’ – is no mere descriptor in The Veilguard. It is the thumping sound of breath in a world that seems balanced on the precipice of disaster, and the ringing bell that lights up a path for its protagonists towards their preordained destiny, a path laid out in the emerald-tinged canopies and crackling lightning of its art, in its riven heroes and their refusal to yield. It is a bold, vibrant incantation of game – and of storytelling – that, if done well, will ensure that it’s remembered for many years to come, and among the ranks of the heaviest-hitters in Dragon Age history.
