Unleashing Creativity and Intelligence: Chromebooks Get an AI Makeover

While artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a dominant driver of innovation and efficiency in the fast-evolving digital world, Microsoft and others, like Samsung, Asus and Acer, have already built AI into their devices. Now it’s GOOGLE's turn. GOOGLE is bringing artificial intelligence to Chromebooks through a bunch of new features.

GOOGLE Elevates Chromebook Experience with AI

In fact, GOOGLE's introduction of the Chromebook Plus standard last year – an additional set of benchmarks for ChromeOS laptops that cost more than $350 to manufacture – created a new baseline for performance and capacities. It’s the impact of AI that is tipping ChromeOS laptops into becoming creative tools.

However, as of January 2023, every Chromebook Plus owner (current and new) will now receive a complimentary 12-month subscription to GOOGLE One AI Premium, which includes full access to Gemini Advanced, GOOGLE's powerful large language model with more than twice the depth of the free version.

Experience Enhanced Writing and Creativity with GOOGLE AI

GOOGLE's AI odyssey on ChromeOS reveals a staggering trove of … creative thinking. Take Help Me Write, which magically turns any text box into an AI-powered editor. Want to write an email? Or maybe a list of ideas? GOOGLE's AI will rewrite, rephrase, or just change the mood for you at your request.

ChromeOS, as ever, allows you to ‘GOOGLE Answers’ parameters for wallpaper generation to produce stunty Lissajous-type images. You can bring up a bizarre landscape from a trip across a gaseous ocean into a moony setting, for example. AI is the magic that makes this into a very real live conjuring.

Photos also saw benefits from AI interventions in GOOGLE Photos via the Magic Editor function, to lossylessly remove objects from images, shift subjects and even backgrounds in images in the manner demonstrated in the GOOGLE Pixel 8 smartphones.

Unleashing the Power of Gemini

Fundamental to the AI revolution behind Chromebook is Gemini, an artificially intelligent, flexible chatbot that can help you write a cover letter as well as dumb down any topic. That’s right, the exclusive Chromebook Plus purchase offer comes with 12 months of Gemini Advanced.

Beyond the Plus: New Features for All Chromebooks

Don’t fret if your device isn’t a Chromebook Plus; GOOGLE is adding features for all Chromebook users. There are even some new features for Chromebook users, including quick Android phone integration, GOOGLE Tasks in the system tray, and a Game Dashboard for better gameplay.

Future updates will continue to roll out, including Hands-Free Control and the ‘Help Me Read’ feature powered by Project Gameface, which will allow the Gemini to search and summarise content with ease, as well as an Overview screen that will soon allow users to share content seamlessly across devices.

Meet the New AI-Ready Chromebooks

And then it was the turn of the inaugural wave of Chromebooks for AI – announcements about half a dozen new ones flooding the market:

  • Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 ($699)
  • Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE ($649)
  • Asus Expertbook CX54 Chromebook Plus ($800)
  • Asus Chromebook CM3001DM2A ($300)
  • Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 ($499)
  • HP Chromebook 14a ($249)
  • HP Chromebook Plus 14 ($449)
  • HP Chromebook Plus x360 ($499)

Every one of them promises to expand what can be done with ChromeOS and even what users perceive as AI.

Understanding GOOGLE's Vision

It’s an example of the way that GOOGLE's constant quest to spread AI throughout its entire product portfolio is creating a new norm for what computers can aspire to do. Putting an AI in the Chromebook is more than just adding intelligence to a laptop, it’s raising the natural aspirations for what a laptop can become. It’s part of an evolving trend in our technologies toward devices that are smarter, more responsive, and ultimately more fit for the diverse people who will use them.

By weaving AI into everyday tech use through the likes of the Chromebook makeover, GOOGLE is pointing the way to a future where technology and intelligence combine together, to produce new answers that are both fresh, and intuitively designed to meet user expectations – and needs. But the Chromebook AI makeover is only the beginning.
