In early November, shoppers geared up for Black Friday 2024, the holiday known for super-sized sales that takes the saying ‘early bird gets the worm’ to a whole new level – especially in a year when the famous Friday came late in the month.
Circles on your calendar for Friday 29 November. This Black Friday, the annual shopping mania, lands the day after Thanksgiving. That presents a unique opportunity for those seeking a deal-hunting edge.
Now Best Buy is crushing it, announcing its deals as early as 1 November – yes, that’s right: weeks before the official day! The site promises to have ‘doorbusters’ ahead of time for those keen to grab the latest tech at amazing prices. And to make your bank account really smile, it is offering a Holiday Price Match Guarantee, so you won’t have any last-minute second thoughts about buying something that might suddenly drop in price.
Things do not, however, wrap up on Black Friday. On 2 December we have Cyber Monday, the weekend’s cloaking story revelation making it virtually impossible not to get in on the act. From here on in, the retail behemoths slide seamlessly into an online world, making ‘web-only specials’ the norm.
Amazon, the goliath of e-commerce, kicks off the holiday shopping season with its Prime Big Deal Days. But it saves its biggest plays for Black Friday. The retail giant’s early jumpstart last year is an indication that it could do it again, and the fire sales could redefine holiday shopping.
Walmart and Target are ready to fire back in the war of holiday dollars. Walmart says it has ‘sales so good they had to bring in new technology’ and Target has worked out a set of special and secret deals just for its Circle members.
For those who like to brave the crowds and shop in person, Best Buy, Walmart and Target all post their hours for the holidays, with Best Buy opening early on Black Friday. But all three giants of commerce are closed on Thanksgiving, a nod to family values and to the need for workers to generally get some decent rest.
The popularity of online shopping is among the most consistently clichéd of clichés, and Amazon is the place to go if you want to do it. Its Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale was as indifferent as possible, both to internet shopping itself, and to the holidays. Since at peak times deals drop every five minutes, Amazon didn’t just outdo traditional retailers – it set a new benchmark for the shopping holidays.
But it’s not just the scope of the discounts that matters – it’s the whole Amazon ecosystem, the Prime memberships making shopping more appealing with free shipping, the allure of well-reviewed, gadget-compatible products, the previously unthinkable attempt to bring luxury beauty products into reach, all of it keeping Amazon front and centre in the holiday shopping circus year after year.
As Black Friday 2024 approaches, we’ll soon see which way Amazon and its big-box brethren will jump. Will a lengthening of the pre-Christmas sales cycle become the next thing (just like Amazon does, the shopping season will become one massive promotional slurry that blurs and/or escapes the Black Friday/Cyber Monday holiday ghetto) or will this be the one domino that doesn’t fall? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – next holiday shopping season is going to be a doozy.
