ASUS disrupted the portable gaming PC market dominated by its competitor with the ROG Ally series. ASUS ROG Ally X, introduced at Computex 2024 event, provides powerful innovation and display quality with exquisite manufacturing. This article focuses on the timeline of the development of the ASUS ROG Ally, particularly the tournament between the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X.
At first glance, the difference between the ROG Ally and the ROG Ally X might look negligible, but a closer look under the hood will show you that this is a machine where ASUS are pulling out all stops in the name of making the peripherals of gaming better. So what’s the difference?
Looking under the hood of the ASUS ROG Ally series, the differences between ROG Ally and ROG Ally X are more clearly technical. In both its first and second iterations, the ASUS ROG Ally series retains the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip. But cranking up the clock proves to deliver results with an upgrade in memory to 24GB LPDDR5-7500 and storage options up to 1TB. Hopefully, these boosts mean that lag on the newer Ally – the ROG Ally X – will be smoother than the original. And more heavy-duty gaming will be possible – and, potentially, more juggling of apps as well.
ASUS ROG Ally, with a $700 price tag at the time of its launch, has successfully brought portable gaming to the masses. Now at $800 for the ROG Ally X, the second-gen portable consumer gaming PC continues to carry the ROG Ally legacy forward. It will be available in July 2024, soon after Computex 2024.
But ASUS touts the ROG Ally X as a new product with a redesigned chassis, deeper handles and ‘thoughtfully distributed buttons for ergonomics and comfort’. The battery is almost certainly the biggest upgrade, increased to 80 watt-hours (from 40 watt-hours in the first Ally) – a significant improvement, both for extending gaming sessions and for keeping the weight increase at a minimum.
Significantly, ASUS hasn’t provided performance data for the ROG Ally X yet, but the upgrades to memory and SSD storage point towards a performance uplift that could firmly plant the Ally X as king of the gaming handhelds. Increased battery capacity fine-tunes that experience by allowing longer sessions of high-performance gaming.
So, evaluating the upgrades that have been made to the device and the fact that you would need to spend an extra $100 for the ROG Ally X, is it worthy of the upgrade? The answer is the fact that the upgrades – the improved battery life, the improved memory, the improved SSD capacities and improved design elements collectively pointed to a significant upgrade. As far as gamers are concerned – especially with the ROG Ally X, who like a combination of performance and portability will find the ASUS ROG Ally X a great choice.
