ASUS has just delivered a masterstroke of compact computing that will change how we experience PC performance and usability for people who want it all: power, performance, versatility and style. That’s according to ASUS, which has revealed the ASUS NUC 14 Performance.
The recently released ASUS NUC 14 Performance is a small powerhouse fitting in the palm of your hand. No concessions on performance come with this 4-litre solution. It’s powered by the latest Intel Core Ultra 9 185H ‘Meteor Lake’ processor, paired with the mighty NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 desktop GPU. If more power is required, ASUS offers a compromise product, powered by a Core Ultra 7 155H processor and an RTX 4060 desktop GPU.
The dimensions of the ASUS NUC 14 Performance (270 mm X 180 mm X 50 mm, WxDxH) and its minuscule weight of only 800 g is paradoxical to the true extent of its capability. Thanks to the flexibility provided by ASUS, users can outfit the compute unit to their preference – the system has two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots for up to 64 GB of supported DDR5 memory, in conjunction with an M.2-2280 slot that’s wired to PCIe Gen 4 x4.
It’s tough to talk about connectivity without highlighting the ASUS NUC 14 Performance again. Its wireless is top-notch, with Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.3. For the wired connection, you have 2.5 GbE wired LAN. The Thunderbolt 4 port – which doubles as USB4 40 Gbps – goes without saying for high-bandwidth needs, complemented by a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, two USB 2.0 ports, additional three DP 1.4 ports from the GPU, and a HDMI 2.1.
Although ASUS isn’t sharing the pricing yet, it’s expected to sell from USD $2,200 to $2,500. A conversation about value props has erupted as an elephant in the room, with relevant comparisons to other compact solutions emerging. Some like to pretend it doesn’t exist, some honestly admit they can’t afford it, while others don’t hesitate to purchase it: the best thing out there, and the best performance in a super-compact size at that.
The announcement of the ASUS NUC 14 Performance comes with the usual response of glee and a smattering of disgust from the tech community. While some balk at the perceived pricing, others relish the premium components and form factor of the device. The wider implications for enthusiasts and professionals alike are debated, too, as these devices could shift public perception away from ultra-tower systems and into smaller acceptable sizes, where performance doesn’t necessarily suffer.
A small cube of white plastic? To understand why ASUS’s NUC 14 Performance feels a bit like turning point, you have to dig a little further. Away from the virtual wrangling of the demo, we’re on the periphery of rectilinear buildings stacked unevenly upon the undulating hills southwest of Taipei. It’s a legacy of when the precious top soil would be carted off to make way for steel buildings. In these golden brown foothills, the ethereal-looking white cubes of baby silkworm nests slowly settle before the underblanket. The world’s surplus urbanites are becoming aware of the WFH lifestyle as they desperate to escape pandemic-hit cities. Luxury real estate developers and white-collar landlords are seizing on the exclusivity of uber-urban niche properties, while streetwear giants such as Supreme are appropriating domestic curbside textures for their store fronts. At the same time, professional studios are setting up in repurposed factories and basement spaces across the city. And as manufacturing goes through its own transformation, a new generation of modular DIY computers are taking flight into the world alongside these new aspirations, harmonising with our constantly evolving homes and workplaces. To cater to all appetites and esthetic sensibilities, tiny, powerful computers are coming together to designate the uneven edges of a burgeoning new computing geometry. As the looking glass of the pandemic’s ‘new normal’ fades and the long-haul goals of what future living might look like are glimpsed through its gaps, it all seems poised to open up into a slightly bewildering mess of colours and contrasts. While the promise of the metaverse and web3.0 once heralded a brave new world of strictly online life, it’s now hard to tell which of the world’s surplus urbanites are truly WFH, actually working from home, or simply pretending to.
