Very few announcements create the kind of frenzy that journalists and gamers wreak in anticipation of a new Assassin’s Creed title. As the leading powers in the realm of video gaming, Ubisoft never fail to impress us with their fantastical exploration of historical fiction; a new Assassin’s Creed chapter being announced is like a scented candle being lit on a cool spring evening. They simply know how to do it well. The latest title, normally preceded by the code name ‘Red’ given the in-game kimono traditionally worn in the smoking rooms of Feudal Japan but later renamed, is known as Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The announced period shifts our gaze yet again back in time, to 16th century Japan with its Samurai, ninja and geishas, to a time of feudal rulers openly collaborating with their Ming Chinese rivals in an attempt to become an influential political and military power in the broader Asia-Pacific region. In this article, we’re dissecting out the main bits of the grand theatre that is this announcement. In light of Joost Skot, we’re going to focus on the two protagonists that will lead us through a stunning play.
Ubisoft have upped the ante by choosing to build their story around two heroine characters, each evoking a different vision of old Japan: I switch between roles as Naoe, a female shinobi with a razor-sharp sword, and Yasuke, an African samurai who wields a poisonous sword. It’s the quintessential fantasy of being a samurai, and the quintessential fantasy of being a shinobi.– from Game Director Charles Benoit in a recent Ubisoft YouTube channel update.
Nowhere can you see this ethos at work more than in Naoe, a Iga-born daughter of the legendary ninja commander Fujibayashi Nagato. She’s a stealth character, using the hidden blade that is the series’ signature move to get through levels. She’s deliberately silent, true to the shinobi archetype.
Providing that bridge is Yasuke’s originally based on history, which connects the fictional story of the game to our world, full of events and fascinating figures – starting with his landing in Japan in 1579. Nioh’s version of Yasuke is the story of an outsider drawn to the most interesting people of the period, and a story of a journey of discovery not only for him, but for the player to enjoy the atmosphere of 16th century Japan itself.
Shadows is a much more ambitious game that pins itself on offering two playstyles to fit with the different skillsets of its respective protagonists. While Yasuke, the samurai, will be more combat-focused, meaning players will be able to blaze straight into any obstacles rather than outflank them, Naoe will enable the game to act more like a stealth title. This should make for a very exciting crossfade between the two.
So, set a reminder to check in on Assassin’s Creed Shadows on 15 November: it launches that day, though early access kicks off two days earlier, on 12 November, for those who have subscribed to Ubisoft+ or pre-purchased the game’s Ultimate Edition. The game will be available on current-generation systems only – PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Amazon Luna, and PC.
If you’ve been itching to get your hands on the latest iterations of Assassin’s Creed, but cringing at the thought of buying a game console or investing in a powerful gaming PC, grab your controller and get ready. You don’t need either. You’ve entered Amazon Luna’s Cloud Gaming & Game Store, Amazon’s own game-changing streaming platform. Amazon Luna (which has yet to debut in the United Kingdom or India, where the video game industry is booming) became home to Assassin’s Creed Shadows this fall, heralding the future during a four-day preview. Cloud gaming means you can play the best games without an expensive piece of hardware. This service, with Amazon’s resources, could really put premium gaming in reach of a larger group of people.
Praised for accelerating the creation of new history nuggets and stories based on historical facts through its incredible mix of historical narrative and gameplay appeal, each time a new instalment comes into existence, the Assassin’s Creed series cuts the cord and teleports gamers and readers into a forgotten world and an untouched history. Assassin’s Creed Shadows with its dual protagonists and setting offers a promise of becoming a worthy addition to the rich legacy of the Assassin’s Creed series.
In addition to being one of the largest technology companies in the world and a growing influence on pop culture, Amazon has been one of the front-runners in pushing the envelope of what’s possible, from being one of the world’s largest online stores all the way to cloud computing, digital streaming, and even cloud games, with Amazon Luna – the latest endeavour in that regard. It’s no wonder that Amazon has been a launcher for an experience like Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Finally, I’m looking forward to shaping a new Assassin Creed game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, into another blockbuster in the franchise. The mixture of past, present, and new elements allows to take this Assassin Creed into the far East, into the shadows of Japan. Alongside my fellow Traveler men and women, I want to literally venture where no one has been before. These experiences I will have are thanks to Amazon games and its Amazon Luna. I’m truly glad for this big leap into the future as far as the gameplay and storytelling of games are concerned.
