At the long-awaited WWDC 2024, Apple has lived up to the hype by removing the veil on iOS 18, the latest iteration of its operating system for iPhones. The tech giant has promised a new era of superb iPhone experience with the latest iteration of its mobile operating system which is packed full of AI upgrades and interesting features. Although iOS 18 is yet to be fully released, coinciding with the iPhone 16 lineup at the end of the year, an opportunity for anyone interested to have a glimpse of the upcoming iPhone OS is available since Apple has made iOS 18 beta available with its developer program. This guide will show you how to get started with iOS 18 beta program, where to download and install the beta version and how it fares with your iPhone.
The first step in getting up and running with iOS 18 beta is enrolling in the Apple Developer Program, which you can do by going to Apple’s enrolment page, signing in with your Apple ID, and making sure you have two-factor authentication enabled on your account. The developer program membership costs $99 (£79 or approximately the same amount in your local currency) per year – a small price to pay for early access to Apple’s latest software, except that the membership fee is often waived for qualifying organisations.
Once you’re signed up, visiting the Apple Developer site on your iPhone is your portal to the future. Logging in requires bringing up the account dialog and accepting whatever terms of service are on display at the moment, after which the Downloads page reveals the iOS 18 developer beta. Navigating to Settings > General > Software Update, you can kick off the upgrade process on your iPhone, waiting while it downloads and installs the new operating system.
So don’t forget that the first releases of iOS 18 (and of every major iOS release each September) are in beta for a reason: they can cause crashes, weirdness and slowdowns, as bugs introduce themselves into the code that Apple and its developers are desperately trying to squash. But the payoff is getting to see brand-new iOS develop right in front of you, shaping the new version in this current iteration – which will then go on to shape the next.
If you’d rather avoid the Developer Program cost, then you can try out iOS 18 as it emerges from the drawing board with Apple’s Public Beta program, available ‘this July’ (no charge, of course). iOS 18 represents an opportunity to dip a toe into the waters of progress, seeing what Apple’s rolls out for the broader Apple community to splash about in.
The most important question is “Will my iPhone upgrade to iOS 18?” Apple has been kind to the vast majority of iPhone users by keeping the same device requirements as iOS 17. That’s important, because any iPhone from the iPhone XS up is compatible, from the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, all the way back to the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, and even the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. That’s a lot of iPhones, folks. In fact, just about every iPhone that isn’t an iPhone X, iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, or iPhone 7 is slated to get iOS 18.
Although we haven’t seen much from Apple about what iOS 18 will include, the whispers around the net are that we’re in for a pleasant surprise. By making our iPhones more intelligent, augmented by AI, they could become more intuitive – making us feel as though the device responds to our thoughts – and less cluttered, as AI improves our communication with the smartphone, rather than each individual app. Among possible changes, iOS 18 could include entirely new user interfaces, as well as more robust privacy settings.
Rumours are mounting about what else Apple might have in store for the launch of iOS 18 and the iPhone 16 – due in September with the release of the iPhone 16. As well as manufacturing rumours, there is speculation about ongoing software enhancements. What is sure is that Apple is not standing still. Moving into 5G and making its own modems will secure the smartphone’s future.
As a tech and innovation giant, Apple has always been at the forefront of creating the future of personal electronics. By delivering state-of-the-art design, function and user experience, Apple’s products, including the iPhone, the iPad and the MacBook, represent the epitome of quality and sophistication. By also pushing the limits of technology and design, Apple sets a new frontier for others to follow.
So, the takeaway: iOS 18 is going to be one hell of a ride. For developers eager to play with the beta there, or iPhone users awaiting the public version, the future of iOS is bright. The future of my relationship with iPhones is even brighter. I might just go out and get another real one right after Apple stops making them. But to all you Apple ‘haters’, the company has a message for you: the best is yet to come.
