Apple has stepped into the world of generative AI, ushering in the next evolution of its hardware, including the iPhone and Mac, at its Worldwide Developer Conference in the scenic town of Cupertino in California this June. In a video narrated by actor Hal Holbrook and his distinguished southern accent, Apple presented a glimpse of what it has been calling Apple Intelligence, and a new, beta-enhanced product experience coming this autumn. But the announcement held an even more important implication, as Apple announced that it is working with OpenAI, as Apple continues its transition from its historically insular strategy.
Apple’s next steps in generative AI are not about keeping up with the Jonses of techdom. Instead, it’s setting up Apple to work with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in a clear partnership of innovation, user control, and privacy. The opt-in experience ensures users are in control. This is quintessential Apple all the way.
There is a kismet about Apple’s partnership with OpenAI: two entities, kindred in innovating minds and trusting spirits, safety-conscious and eager to distribute advanced AI to the masses. Or as the CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman put it: ‘We’re excited to bring the power of ChatGPT to Apple users in a new way. This partnership with Apple reflects our shared commitment to expanding access to the marvels of advanced AI while staying firmly grounded in the safety rails.’
Siri doesn’t live in a vacuum; the technology behind it is algorithmic, not magical. The latest rejuvenation of Apple’s AI involves more than just data and algorithms. Generative AI spins the dial toward a future where Siri might convincingly answer complicated questions, and no longer be chained to a short list of possibilities where I have to fit my query. It could be part of a computing future that is more human-sounding – and even more human-like.
In other words, Apple Intelligence goes far beyond mere algorithmic tweaking of user experience. Features like Writing Tools and Image Playground reflect Apple’s flair for creativity, but they also reinforce the company’s ethos of enrichment – humanising user engagement with intelligent interfaces that breathe life into messages, notes and beyond through AI-generated visuals and bespoke emojis.
Sitting right in the middle of Apple’s communications strategy, with this strategic AI pivot, is the ultimate promise of privacy and security. Craig Federighi’s announcement of Private Cloud Compute is the Rousseau of the industry proclaiming a new paradigm: intensive AI tasks get the full might of the cloud, but never at the cost of user data, because that’s something Apple’s founder Steve Jobs never ever wanted to do. User privacy is not an ‘easy extra’ at Apple.
The impact of bringing ChatGPT together with Siri is more than just a simple upgrade; it’s also a proactive strategic move to elevate user experience to an entirely new level of intelligence and responsiveness. This is not merely a technical challenge for Apple, balancing privacy with security and the creep factor of AI’s generative capabilities, but a more fundamental and profound one of balancing the promises of new technology against the need for user trust.
From the outset, Apple has been a leader in the innovation of technology, taking a design-first approach to creating products that function as much more than mere tools. Apple’s history has been about building products that aren’t just machines but machines that also enhance the intellect and creativity of the human being. In adopting generative AI, Apple is not just responding to change; it is once again leading the way, serving as an example of how the pursuit of improved technology does not rob people of their privacy, security or autonomy, but instead strengthens it.
Here, Apple Intelligence is more than a feature – it is an expression of Apple’s enduring ethos: to move the world forward in dramatic leaps, while anchoring every one of those leaps in the ethos of trust and respect for the user. In its collaboration with OpenAI, Apple embraces the future of AI while reaffirming its role as an architect of the future, as a force for human empowerment guided by the value systems of humanity.
