Given that technologies change overnight, it is important these days to catch up with what’s new. At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year, the innovation brand APPLE, for example, proudly marched out software updates designed to push the boundaries of connectivity and customisation. Right out of the gate, the newest iterations of iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro, Mac and Apple Watch were designed not to enable but to preempt the user’s needs, putting APPLE at the centre of tech revolutions.
The centrepiece of APPLE’s announcements was iOS 18, putting tools that allow users to customise their home and lock screen at their fingertips. PiPs allows videos or pictures to play over other apps: watch a street view of your favourite city while sketching or playing Sudoku, for example. But the not-so-hidden feature was the ability to rearrange apps, widgets and even their colours so your iPhone’s interface can finally become as individualistic as you are. APPLE also spruced up the Control Centre, giving quick access to important functions, and added new privacy features such as the new option to lock apps to make sure your photos remain hidden from prying eyes.
APPLE’s secret upgrade to iOS 18 is satellite messaging: no matter how far off-grid you get, you’ll never be more than a text away from your friends. Extended RCS support allows Android and iOS users to share media and converse with each other, automatically closing the ecosystem gap. Mail and Photos get a much-needed overhaul.
Porting the focus to the iPad, APPLE was not only able to copy the features from iOS 18 but even make iPadOS 18 even more iOS-specific with certain exclusives. A calculator, plus a new Math Notes feature addresses long-time user requests for these utilities, plus other changes to handwriting and tab bars appear to increase functionality while also increasing aesthetic beauty. Safari Screenshots and Highlights plus APPLE’s new Screen Share via SharePlay enable a new era of browser collaboration and remote interaction.
The macOS Sequoia update features a number of much-anticipated features, such as iPhone mirroring that enables Mac users to interact with iPhone apps directly on their desktop. So if you want to transfer a photo from your iPhone to your Mac, now you can do it more smoothly and effortlessly than ever before. Improvements to Safari and Window Tiling increase the efficiency and usability of web browsing and desktop organisation.
The Vitals app offers a full suite of health monitoring tools for Apple Watch users, and the company’s Pregnancy support feature reasserts its commitment to comprehensive health tracking that ends all exclusion and bias. However, the main features of VisionOS 2 include spatial memories and new hand gestures for the Vision Pro, and the reengineering of 2D images and videos into attractive spatial visuals.
But as we saw at the WWDC, APPLE’s mastery of bringing the technology to a human scale continues. Giving personalisation options to make your device really your own, and features that keep you connected whatever comes next, is what APPLE is bringing. Their vision for connectivity in the future, a world where our digital experience is as rich as our physical experience, keeps getting clearer with each update in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS – and with VisionOS.
Fundamentally, APPLE is more than a technology pioneer: it is a lifestyle brand that obsesses over how to fit clever technology into the rhythms of day-to-day life so that technology surrounds and enhances people’s experiences, becoming something we take for granted. From the garage to the temple of innovation, APPLE looks like a company that never stops reaching for the next advance.
Even as we read the laundry list of features showcased at WWDC, APPLE’s vision for the future becomes clear: technology that helps us be more productive and connected – but also to interact with devices as a more personal and profound experience. APPLE’s stance on privacy, health and seamless connectivity, indicates that it is much more than a manufacturer of tech hardware – it is a custodian of technological evolution that makes us better.
