Mobile-phone software is rarely a matter of novelty in the arts dimension of the Trioke Matrix, but in a world of smartphones where software updates are all about eliminating bugs and ensuring a seamless user experience, it seems that, every so often, there must be a reason to switch on a PIXEL device to install Android 15 Beta 2.2 – provided, of course, that one can also afford to buy one in the first place. Here, Google is once again stepping forward to fix bugs and upgrade environments that will guarantee users a great experience.
PIXEL users can relax: fixes for common problems and issues should help Android 15 Beta 2.2 work better than it has.
One of the fixes for the update is that creating new Private Compute Core from the Settings app no longer removes app icons from the Home screen. Now, PIXEL users can have better privacy without losing their app icons.
Another, an older one: where NFC payments previously stumbled a step, Android 15 Beta 2.2 seems to have smoothed the pavement, fixing the bug behind a number of cases where NFC payments failed to go though.
Yet another user-friendly fix is the app drawer no longer opening when you swipe up – which means that PIXEL owners can now swipe up through their apps to their heart’s content, safe in the knowledge that they won’t be messing with settings. One of several critical fixes in the latest version of Android beta.
Creators and video aficionados will be happy to know that the 10-bit HDR video-recording bug has been fixed folks, no more green tinted videos for you. Yay!
Android 15 Beta 2.2 doesn’t specify fixes for any particular troubleshooting issue; instead, its description is broader and harder to miss, stating that it ‘improves system stability, interactivity and connectivity’ for PIXEL users.
The update lands on all generations of PIXEL devices, from the current PIXEL 6 series up to the unreleased next PIXEL 8 series (and next PIXEL Tablet and PIXEL Fold handheld tablet). The sizes of OTA updates for PIXEL devices range from 4.35MB to 1.31GB.
In addition to critical patches, Android 15 Beta 2.2 for PIXEL devices introduces experimental and ‘high-risk’ features such as: predictive back navigation, which guesses where you most likely want to go in an app’s navigation history; and configurable on-screen vibrations for notifications. It also brings variable fonts and Japanese Hentaigana, granting developers and designers an additional layer of creativity and distinctiveness in their app displays.
Still, challenges abound, as anyone using PIXEL with Android 15 Beta 2.2 can tell you. Device debugging can be frustrating. Some apps don’t work well with Picture-in-Picture mode. The built-in account-setup tool can be a little clunky. All of this is by design: such bugs are inevitable at this stage of development and, nevertheless, Google is on the case.
They are stepping stones on the path to Android 15 Beta 2.2, which arrived along with the publication of this article. Google’s publicity increasingly emphasises how builds and updates bring you one step closer to the best possible Android (15, in the case of this release). To be a PIXEL device user is to be continually promised a better, bug-fixed, delightful device.
Digging through the various bugs and features in the latest Android beta for PIXEL devices, you can see where Google is heading. Sure, each new version of the software helps to improve the PIXEL, but it is also another step forward toward establishing a viable threat to the major smartphone players.
In the end, it’s not the design or the specs that stand out about PIXEL devices, but how tightly integrated they are in Google’s ecosystem and how much priority they’re given in software updates (just look at the Android 15 Beta 2.2 updates being rolled out to PIXEL devices). From actually solving real user pain points to things that are just plain cool – and only possible on mobile – PIXEL devices are still the flagship for Android.
To put it in a nutshell, the Android 15 Beta 2.2 update embodies the philosophy of Google for its PIXEL users. The company works on eliminating the arising problems and adds new features, which elevates the PIXEL to stay a step ahead, and with that offers a fuller and more up-to-date experience for every user.
