The Mazda MX-5 Miata has been a star in the theatre of tossable sports cars ever since it first bowed onstage in 1989. In fact, millions have thrilled to its unique combination of balance, handling and open-top joy. And that’s exactly what they’ll be doing years from now, because the particular niche occupied by the nimble little Mazda will never disappear. In 2024, the MX-5 Miata will still be there, and still be the hero of the show. But thanks to a raft of updates, the MX-5 Miata will be an even better sports car. Here are four great new features of the 2022 MX-5 Miata.
Even as automatic transmissions make inroads, the MX-5 continues to trumpet the manual. The six-speed manual, standard on the Sport and Club, with the optional six-speed automatic on the Grand Touring, offers visceral connection between driver, car and road to provide a surprisingly engaging experience. For the hard core it’s the definitive driving experience within an MX-5.

When combined with Mazda’s signature Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) technology, the steering feels telepathic when cornering and highway cruising alike. The balance of great technical refinement in steering further enhances the Miata Driving Experience by making it easier and more comfortable to drive, but no less enjoyable.
For those who want the Club to be even more competitive than racer-for-the-street, the Brembo BBS Recaro package to the basic Club coupe get-up is tempting. Its dynamic style package adds tasteful flourishes, but dials up performance with the Miata’s first red-calipered Brembo brakes, complimenting them with 17-inch forged BBS wheels. And an exclusive dynamic stability control track feature to the Club adds punch to its power. You can add a stripe down the centre to the roof. Even if you wanted something faster than the GPS-saturated speeds of a turbocharged clutch fest, and say, ‘Bring on Hoonigan!’ even to the Bugatti Chiron, you couldn’t. The MX-5 is balanced perfectly between elegance and exhilaration.
Indeed, the 2024 MX-5 adds performance, but it also features a series of upgrades that refresh its iconic looks while expanding comfort in the cabin. Bigger, entirely new LED head and tail lamps, as well as stylish new 17-inch aluminium wheel designs give the small roadster an edge when it comes to turning heads on the streets. But it’s inside that Mazda engineers have worked overtime, adding a few millimetres of padding to softer surfaces – just to name one example. And then there’s the infotainment system, which now brings Mazda’s newest cabin tech, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s more than a complete refresh, it’s a remix. The 2024 MX-5 shows that old school and new technologies can mix.
Another is the consideration of aural pleasure. Speakers are positioned in the headrests of the Bose stereo fitted to the Club trim, while the glorious sound of the MX-5’s engine is as immersive as it is remarkable. It’s all part and parcel of what Mazda is working towards: the cars are not just beautifully effective products of a uniquely considered approach to driving pleasure.
In its five-speed manual transmission, to its high-performance speakers, the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadster shows through its every component an unremitting devotion to joy in driving: not merely in its vehicle’s potential to get there, but in the heart of the driver who gets the MX-5 there.
