New reports indicate that the amount of waste has increased to 61,000,000 lbs/day since recycling has started to collapse.

Chemicals like hydrochloric acid are used to recover the metals in e-waste, which leads to toxic run-off that contaminates the soil, water, and air in the surrounding area. This has devastating effects on the local communities, with studies showing that children living in these areas test higher for levels of lead in their system, which can stunt physical and mental development. Animals living in these areas are exposed to toxins like mercury, which is used in screens and monitors. Crops, such as rice, planted in these communities become toxic after being exposed to harmful levels of substances like cadmium, which can be found as a coating on electronics. According to Globalcitizen.org*, “cell phones and various other electronic devices makeup a large chunk of the 273,000 tons of e-waste that make it into California landfills each year.” If those are the kinds of numbers we are seeing for this state, imagine how many more tons of e-waste there are in other states, countries, and continents. The earth is calling for us to do our part by reducing our carbon footprint. We must hold ourselves accountable so that we leave a smaller carbon footprint for future generations.
