The Alarming Impact of E-Waste Pollution on Our Oceans and Communities.
Everyday 48,000,000 pounds of waste goes into oceans.
New reports indicate that the amount of waste has increased to 61,000,000 lbs/day since recycling has started to collapse.
The toxins produced from improperly recycling e-waste are dangerous and polluting. Chemicals like hydrochloric acid are used to recover the metals in e-waste, which leads to toxic run-off that contaminates the soil, water, and air in the surrounding area. This has devastating effects on the local communities, with studies showing that children living in these areas test higher for levels of lead in their system, which can stunt physical and mental development. Animals living in these areas are exposed to toxins like mercury, which is used in screens and monitors. Crops, such as rice, planted in these communities become toxic after being exposed to harmful levels of substances like cadmium, which can be found as a coating on electronics. This all shows how toxic e-waste can be for the environment, and how it permeates through every level of the ecosystem.
Our Green Actions- Environmental Activities
Regular Local Beach Cleanups
In our commitment to preserving our beaches and the planet’s fragile aquatic ecosystem, Gizmogo believes that we need to do our part to help. You can usually find our team participating in local beach cleanups on a regular basis. Every year there is an increased amount of electronics ending up in our oceans. That is why it is important to do our part in preserving it, but we cannot do it alone. It will take all of us to protect our ocean and its wildlife. Our efforts are in hope of creating a movement, one that reduces e-waste dramatically and improves ocean life. However, our efforts don’t stop there. We donate a portion of the profits from each electronic device towards local charities to support our nearby communities. This is just a small portion of our philanthropy as we work to save the planet, one device at a time.
Reduce Electronic Waste in Landfills
We want you to know that you play a huge part in all of this! When you do business with Gizmogo, you are helping reduce the landfills of electronic waste. Did you know only about 15%-20% of e-waste is recycled properly? Carelessly throwing our electronic gizmos away is unhealthy, since they are usually shipped to other countries to be considered waste. This type of waste is very dangerous because of substances such as cadmium, mercury and lead that are used in all electronics. These substances cause major damage to the environment and may also cause health problems. We believe our efforts and actions are highly effective in creating change.
Finding Precious Metals in E-Waste
Additionally, precious metals from outdated or unwanted technology can be saved, recycled, and utilized again. Metals such as gold, palladium, silver, and platinum can be found in devices like laptops and desktop computers. Some metals more commonly found in everyday devices include iron, copper, aluminum, lead, and nickel. The metal recovery process can benefit our society by reusing these metals to replace parts from similar devices or repairing it altogether. If the electronic works, we have less of a need for major electronic companies to produce more of the latest, newest models. It is unnecessary to continue to allow electronic devices to end up in toxic waste situations.
E-Waste Recycling & Low-Carbon Society
According to Globalcitizen.org*, “cell phones and various other electronic devices makeup a large chunk of the 273,000 tons of e-waste that make it into California landfills each year.” If those are the kinds of numbers we are seeing for this state, imagine how many more tons of e-waste there are in other states, countries, and continents. The earth is calling for us to do our part by reducing our carbon footprint. We must hold ourselves accountable so that we leave a smaller carbon footprint for future generations. A huge part of that duty is recycling electronic gadgets properly and safely. Gizmogo believes that we as a human race have the power to step up and take responsibility for the planet. After all, we all live on planet Earth. Let’s make it a team effort to care for the environment, and for each other.
Gizmogo's Everlasting Goal
Experts say that minimization, refurbishment of electronic devices, and the duration of their use in one form can reduce the catastrophic impact of e-waste on the environment. At the same time, companies should create devices with longer lifecycle to significantly increase their average usage duration and reduce e-waste. This is a practical and lasting way to protect the world from the pitfalls of e-waste.
