The battle between Samsung and iPhone has been raging on for years. Every year both companies outdo themselves with new technology and features for their respective devices, and consumers have to face the hard choice of choosing between them.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max are the latest releases from the two titans, and the contest has never been tighter.
Which of the two should you buy? This iPhone 13 Pro Max vs. Samsung S22 Ultra comparison article will help you make an informed decision.
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs Samsung S22 Ultra: Which is Better?
There are 5 main factors you should consider before buying any phone.
- Performance
- Camera
- Display
- Design
- Price
Follow along as we discuss how both phones perform in these areas.
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs Samsung S22 Ultra: Performance
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. This is the fastest processor among Android phones, but it’s no match for Apple 15 bionic chip that the iPhone 13 Pro Max packs.
Multiple benchmark tests were conducted, including the Geekbench 5 single- and multi-core test, and the iPhone topped all of them.
That said, the performance difference is almost unnoticeable when you start using the phones. It usually comes down to mere seconds or even milliseconds of delay.
Battery performance
The Samsung S22 Ultra comes with a 5,000 mAh battery which is bigger than the 4,352 mAh battery found on the Pro Max.
However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has been found to last longer in real life, and that’s because its software is better optimized.
The S22 Ultra makes up for its shortcomings with faster charging.
It takes 30 minutes to charge the iPhone to 50% capacity, while it only takes 20 minutes to charge the Galaxy S22 Ultra to the same capacity.
Performance Winner: iPhone 13 Pro Max
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs Samsung S22 Ultra: Camera
Both phones feature:
- Primary Rear Camera
- Ultrawide Camera
- 3x Telephoto Camera
However, Samsung has gone the extra step to include an additional telephoto lens which gives you 10x optical zoom, and it’s insane.
You need to see some shots of the moon captured with the S22 Ultra to understand what I’m talking about.
But, while the S22 offers more megapixels and a larger sensor to capture more light, iPhone pictures come out brighter and crisper, especially in portrait mode. They also have a more natural look compared to S22 Ultra images which sometimes appear slightly over-saturated due to Samsung’s extra processing.
The exception is during night shots, where images captured using S22 Ultra are more detailed and discernable.
Also, to give credit to Samsung, the portrait mode on the S22 Ultra has received a massive upgrade, all thanks to the AI Stereo Depth Map feature that separates subjects from the background.
In terms of video quality, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is still the undisputed king. The only advantage that the galaxy S22 ultra has over the iPhone is that it supports up to 8K at 24fps. The iPhone 13 Pro Max is limited to 4K at 60 fps.
Camera Winner: Samsung S22 Ultra if you are primarily looking for a camera phone. iPhone 13 Pro Max if you want a video phone.
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs Samsung S22 Ultra: Display
The Samsung S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max come with an AMOLED display which does a great job delivering colors.
A distinguishing factor is that the galaxy phone is slightly taller at 6.8 inches. Since it uses a punch-hole camera, it has more screen space to work with.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max camera notch is smaller than its predecessors but still obtrusive compared to the punch hole.
During tests, the Galaxy S22 Ultra covered more of the sRGB color gamut and the DCI-P3 color space and reached higher brightness levels than the iPhone.
So, if you are using your phone in direct sunlight and also wearing sunglasses, the S22 ultra is the phone you want to be holding.
The iPhone uses a ceramic shield for screen protection, while the S22 ultra uses gorilla glass victus plus. We didn’t do any drop tests, but both materials have been proven to do a fantastic job.
Display Winner: Samsung S22 Ultra
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs Samsung S22 Ultra: Design
The thing about design is that it’s subjective, and you decide which design is best for you.
Personally, we love the S22 Ultra design more.
Instead of the rounded edges, we are used to, the S22 Ultra comes with square edges. The sides are also curved and feature an elegant matte finish at the back.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max also features a matte finish at the back, but its sides are flat, and the edges are rounded.
The iPhone has a stainless steel frame at the sides, which is more durable than the aluminum frame used for S22 Ultra.
Design Winner: Subjective. Depends on personal taste
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs Samsung S22 Ultra: Price
The buying price will vary depending on the storage variant that you choose.
Both phones are available in the same variants, including
- 128GB
- 256GB
- 512GB
- 1TB
The iPhone 13 Pro Max starts at a lower price than the S22 Ultra for the 128GB variant but becomes more expensive as you upgrade the specs.
